Can we talk about the agency I hired for Google Ads in Calgary?

I hired a marketing agency in Calgary back in March to run my Google Ads for my small plumbing business. They promised me 50 leads a month for $1,500 but after 3 months I only got 8 calls total. I checked the dashboard and they had my budget going to broad match keywords with no negative keywords at all. I lost over $4,000 in ad spend with almost nothing to show for it. Has anyone else had an agency waste their budget on bad keyword settings like this?

That's the thing about a lot of agencies these days (and it's not just marketing, it's everywhere). People will promise you the world with these big flashy numbers, but they never seem to understand the basics of how something actually works. You see it with car mechanics who talk about fixing your engine but don't check the oil, or contractors who quote you a deck price but skip the foundation work. They're just going through the motions to get your money, hoping you won't notice the details. Your ad budget getting tossed at broad keywords with zero negatives is the digital version of that same lazy hustle.

Honestly used to roll my eyes at people who complained about agencies not knowing the basics. Figured it was just clients being cheap or not understanding how digital ads work. But after watching a buddy burn through 15 grand on Google Ads with zero negative keywords and broad match on everything, yeah I get it now. @riverowens hit it exactly right - it's the same lazy hustle you see everywhere, just dressed up in marketing jargon. The basics aren't flashy but they matter, and skipping them is just bad work.
