I finally stopped guessing on ad copy after a client called me out

Last month a client told me my headlines were 'too fancy' and after switching to plain language their click-through jumped 22% in two weeks, has anyone else gotten feedback that forced them to dumb things down?

Fancy writing is what separates pros from the pack, not just a lucky A/B test result.

Fancy writing only gets you so far if you can't back it up with data. A/B tests tell you what actually works with real people, not what sounds good in a conference room. Pros know when to write tight and when to let the polish shine, but calling it the separator feels like skipping the foundation. Some of the best converting copy I've seen was plain as oatmeal, just hit the right notes for the audience. Luck plays a part in testing too, but ignoring the numbers is a fast way to get humbled.
