My neighbor warned me about air fryer grease fires and I blew him off
Last week my neighbor Dave caught me scraping grease out of my air fryer tray into the sink. He said "you know that stuff can catch fire if you don't clean the heating element, right?" I rolled my eyes but then I pulled out the top grate and saw a solid layer of black crust. Like an eighth inch thick in spots. I looked up recalls and found 3 air fryer fire recalls just this year from the CPSC. Now I hit the heating coil with a damp paper towel after every other use. Has anyone else had close calls with grease buildup I should look out for?

Completely changed my mind too, honestly. I used to just wipe down the basket and call it good, figured that was enough. Then I actually popped out the top element on mine and found this thick, sticky film that looked like old motor oil. I spent a solid 20 minutes scrubbing it off with a toothbrush and baking soda, never doing that again. Now I check the heating coil every two weeks and hit it with a dry paper towel when it's still warm (but unplugged, don't be like me and almost short something out).

Did you actually try cleaning the heating coil with a damp paper towel while the unit was still warm? Because I did that once and it sizzled so loud it scared me, lol. I feel like people don't realize the grease can pool underneath the heating element where you can't even see it. Do you have other spots in the air fryer that are tough to reach and just get caked up over time?
