DAE notice new guys torque in one pass instead of crisscross?
Had a kid on a 737 brake job at our MSP hangar last month run every bolt down to spec in a straight line, one right after the other, and the wheel half came back with a slight warp. The manual wants a crisscross pattern in stages for a reason, it spreads the load so the flange doesn't pull to one side. I've been doing it star pattern since my A&P days and never cooked a wheel. Am I crazy or is this just not getting taught in school anymore?
Been seeing this more and more with the newer guys, schools drill the torque value but skip right over the sequence. The star pattern isn't just a suggestion, it walks the load around the flange so nothing pulls hard to one side while the metal is still settling. A single pass front to back on a big wheel is asking for a warp, and that kid just learned it the hard way.
