Hydraulic lines had no color codes years ago. Crossed them on a job. Big problem. Now it's all marked.

Is it really that big a deal if you just pay attention?

Man, no paint or tape or anything to tell them apart. I can't even imagine trying to hook up a bank valve with lines that all look the same. Crossing those would send a cylinder flying the wrong way, easy way to wreck some equipment or hurt somebody.

Seriously, it's asking for trouble. I've seen guys accidentally reverse a hydraulic ram on a wood splitter because the lines weren't marked. One wrong hookup and you could blow a seal, ruin a gearbox, or even snap a piston rod. That's not just a quick fix, that's hundreds down the drain. Even if you know the system, under pressure anyone can mix up two plain black hoses. A little colored tape is the cheapest insurance you'll ever buy.
