I stopped using safety wire on fuel fittings after an old timer in Spokane showed me a better way
For almost a decade I twisted .032 safety wire on every fuel line like it was gospel, until an old timer at Felts Field showed me how much faster and more consistent torque you get with a torque wrench and a crows foot. He pulled a fitting I'd wired two weeks earlier and it was already backing off half a flat, which kind of killed the whole argument for me. How are you all handling fuel line fittings on the newer stuff, is it all torque spec now or does anyone still default to wire?
Did you ever torque something and then still wire it just because your hands didn't know what to do otherwise? I did that for about a month after the old timer at my field set me straight. Caught myself reaching for the spool on a freshly torqued B nut like some kind of nervous habit, same way I jiggle the door lock three times before bed. The torque wrench and crows foot won me over though, mostly because my arms got tired of fishing wire through those little holes behind the engine. Now I keep the spool in the box and only pull it out when a manual actually calls for it. Old habits die hard, but so do loose fittings, so I picked the one that keeps me off the evening news.
