Talking to an old DC-3 mechanic changed how I check torque strips

Last month I was helping a volunteer crew with a warbird at a small field outside Reno. One of the old guys, must be pushing 80, watched me torque a row of bolts and then scribble on the strips with a marker. He asked why I marked them before final torque. I said habit from school. He just laughed and said the strip is proof for the inspector, not for you, and showed me how he does a final visual after the wrench clicks, checking for any shift he might have missed. It sounds small, but I've been doing it backwards for 8 years. Anyone else pick up little habits from the older generation that totally reframe your routine?
