Took a shortcut on a flap cable and paid for it in Phoenix

Last month I was rushing to get a 737 out before a ramp freeze in Phoenix. I reused a frayed control cable instead of swapping it, figured one more cycle wouldn't hurt. At 2,000 feet the flap asymmetry light came on and the aircraft went into alternate mode. We landed fine, but the airline grounded it for 3 days while I explained the paperwork to the FAA. Has anyone else gambled on a worn part to beat a deadline and instantly regretted it?
