Heads up on those new wireless sensors from the big box stores

Got a call last week for a false alarm at a house I wired in Phoenix. The homeowner bought a cheap wireless door sensor from a hardware store and tried to add it to their existing panel. It kept going off every 20 minutes, day and night. I figured it was a bad battery or a pairing issue, but after an hour of testing, I found the problem. The sensor was using the same frequency as the homeowner's new smart garage door opener, causing constant interference. I swapped it out for a proper, system-compatible sensor and the problem stopped cold. It was a simple fix, but it ate up a whole afternoon. Has anyone else run into weird interference from other smart home gadgets lately?

I get what you're saying about the garage door opener, but in my experience, that's just one piece of it. The real issue is that a lot of these store-bought gadgets are not built to last or play nice with other systems. They use the cheapest parts to hit a price point. I've seen the same interference happen with wifi routers and even baby monitors. Trying to save a few bucks upfront can cost you more in service calls later.

Wasn't there a whole thing about certain wireless signals all using the same crowded frequency? Makes you wonder why they even sell stuff that's basically designed to fail.

Oh man, that exact garage door interference thing bit me too. I had a client who couldn't figure out why their sensor kept tripping, and we finally realized their new smart opener was blasting the same signal every time it moved. Swapping to a different brand sensor that uses a cleaner frequency fixed it right up, no more ghost alerts.
