Question about code updates vs. doing what the customer wants

Had coffee with a fire marshal last Tuesday in Columbus, and he told me he's seeing more homeowners request wireless-only systems without a cellular backup. He said the code allows it in some cases, but his department will fail the final inspection if the signal path isn't documented properly. That got me thinking about a recent job where a homeowner wanted me to skip the keypad by the front door because it messed up their decor. I did it, passed inspection, but now I wonder if I'm doing the customer a favor or setting them up for trouble later. Between following the book and keeping people happy, where do you draw the line? Has anyone else had a customer request that bent the code and you had to talk them out of it?
