Serious question, I was at a job in a big office building in Dallas and saw a tech run all his wire in the open ceiling without any conduit.

Everyone says you HAVE to use conduit for commercial work, but this guy had been doing it for years with zero callbacks. It made me think maybe we overcomplicate some jobs. Has anyone else skipped conduit on a low-risk run and been fine?

Look, that's a code violation waiting to happen. Plenum cable is one thing, but just throwing wire over a ceiling grid is asking for trouble. It might work until there's a fire or someone yanks it doing other work. I've seen inspectors fail jobs for less, and fixing it later costs way more than just doing it right with conduit the first time.

Yeah, the "fixing it later costs way more" part is so true. Reminds me of a time we had to re-run a whole camera system because the first guy just draped it over ductwork. Took three days to undo that mess. Oliverw46, you get it now, but man, watching them tear out that false ceiling to find the cables was a real lesson. Always hurts more the second time around.
