Spent $90 on a thermal camera for my phone to find drafts, ended up using it to spot a mouse nest in a customer's wall.

That's a solid return on investment right there. Finding a pest problem early can save thousands in damage. The best tools always find uses you never planned for.

My thermal camera mostly just shows me how bad my home insulation is, which is its own kind of pest problem. I found a cold spot and it was just my terrible DIY weather stripping. Still saved me money on the heating bill though, so I'll call it a win. Guess the tool found the problem, it just turned out to be me all along.

Honestly, that's a pretty expensive way to find a draft. A cheap candle or just your hand would have found that bad weather stripping too. Those cameras cost hundreds and mostly just show you stuff you already know, like windows are cold. It feels like a solution looking for a problem unless you're a pro. Most people will use it once, see the whole house is blue, and then it just collects dust.
