Dropped $3400 on a mini excavator rental for a basement dig in Red Deer and a hand crew would've beat me
Everyone in my circle swore you can't dig a basement by hand anymore, so I rented a 1.7 ton mini ex from a yard here in Red Deer for a week. That ran me $3,400 with delivery and fuel, plus I had to wait 9 days for the unit because two other guys had it booked. The machine couldn't get into my back alley without clipping a fence, so I ended up hand digging the last 11 feet anyway with a spade and a wheelbarrow. Then I found out my neighbor's nephew did his own dig in Penhold with three guys and a skid steer for under $1,800 in 4 days. If your lot is tight or you've got fence lines, price out the manpower first instead of jumping straight to iron. Anyone here actually come out ahead renting equipment versus just paying a crew for a small dig?
