Got told my finish carpentry was 'too tight' and fought it for months
An older guy from Edmonton looked at my baseboards and said I wasn't leaving enough expansion gap (you know, for humidity changes). I thought he was nuts because I always aimed for zero gaps, but after a dry winter last year three of my joints cracked right open. Has anyone else had to adjust their technique after a contractor called them out on something that seemed backwards?

About 1/8 inch gap behind the baseboard and leaving a little space where two pieces meet has saved me a lot of headaches. I used to think tight was better too, but here in the Pacific Northwest we get big humidity swings and I learned that wood needs room to move. A trick I picked up is to use a 16 penny nail as a spacer at the joint during install, then pull it out when you're done.
