Hired a crew from Calgary for my basement reno and went with my buddy's recommendation instead of the cheapest quote
The cheap crew quoted $8k and missed every deadline, the Calgary guys finished in 3 weeks flat with zero callbacks. Has anyone else learned the hard way that lowest bid always bites you?

Oh man, I don't know if it's always that cut and dry. I've had plenty of times where the mid-range quote worked out fine, and once I paid top dollar for a crew that still managed to mess up my drywall seams. Sounds like you got lucky with your buddy's guys, but I've seen cheap crews do decent work too, it just takes more babysitting and follow-ups. Plus $8k is a pretty big difference depending on what you're getting done, so it's not always pure insanity to go with the lower bid.

Yeah, you're spot on about the babysitting part. I've had to stay on top of some cheaper crews too and it's a whole job in itself, but sometimes it's the only way to stay within budget. The $8k gap is no joke, I'd take the gamble on the lower bid if I had time to keep an eye on things.
