Measured a whole basement floor by myself with a laser instead of a tape, saved 3 rolls of poly
Last month I took on a basement development in Red Deer and decided to try a rotary laser level for the layout instead of my usual chalk lines and tape. Figured it would take an hour, and it ended up taking about 20 minutes for the whole 1,100 square foot space. The unexpected part was that I caught a 3/4 inch dip in the slab near the sump pit that I would have totally missed with a tape and string. I had to pour a bit more self leveler there, but it saved me from a wavy floor under the LVP later. Cost me $180 for the laser at a tool sale, and it paid for itself on that one job in material alone. I still keep my tape on the belt for framing though. Anyone here run a laser for stud walls or is it overkill for that?
How did you deal with the sump pit dip once the laser found it? Like did you just pour leveler over the whole low spot or did you have to figure out how deep it actually was first? And for the stud wall question, I'm guessing the laser helps most when you're setting plates on a floor that isn't flat but maybe not worth it when the walls are short? Seems like the dip you caught would throw off your bottom plate more than anything upstairs.
