Am I the only one who thinks foam backer rod is overrated for caulk joints?

Tried using it on a big patio slab expansion joint last month down off Central Ave and honestly, the caulk just pushed it right down to the bottom. Ended up having to dig it all out and just used a deeper layer of sand instead, which cost me like $8 total. Maybe I got the wrong size rod but I've had way better results skipping it on wider gaps.

Respectfully, I think you just had the wrong size rod. Ive used it on half a dozen patio joints and it works great when you jam a fat enough piece in there that it actually COMPRESSES against the walls.
