Guy at the Tile Mile on Menaul told me to skip the backer board and I still think about it
I was picking up thin set at the tile place over on Menaul about 6 months ago and this older guy in line behind me asked what I was working on. Told him I was redoing the floor in a half bath, 40 square feet, and he goes "don't waste your money on cement board, just skim it with the thin set and go." I asked him if he'd done many floors and he said he'd laid tile in Albuquerque for 31 years. I nodded and bought the backer board anyway because everything I've ever read says you need it over plywood. But here's the thing that stuck with me, he wasn't trying to sell me anything or show off, he just looked at my cart and said his piece and got his bucket of grout and left. I've torn out two floors since then that were laid on bare plywood with no board and they cracked all to hell, so I think I made the right call. Still bugs me though, because that man clearly knew more about tile in this town than I ever will. Anybody here ever go with the direct thin set over plywood method and have it actually hold up?
