Lifted a trick from the hardware store guy about mixing mud
Was grabbing some compound at the big box store off Coors and this older employee told me to add a splash of water and let the bucket sit for 10 minutes before mixing. Tried it on my kitchen ceiling patch and the texture came out way smoother, no more clumps. Also he said to use a drill with a paint mixer attachment instead of the hand tool, which I always skipped. Has anyone else tried letting the mud hydrate like that, or is there a better trick for smaller batches?

Tbh I read that bit about letting the bucket sit for 10 minutes and thought "yeah right, like I have that kind of patience." But then I tried it on a patch job in my hallway and honestly it was night and day. The mud just spreads like butter instead of fighting you the whole time. My drill with the mixer attachment is the only reason I didnt throw the hand tool across the garage, that thing always leaves me with more lumps than a bad pancake batter. I still managed to make a mess on the floor but at least the ceiling looks decent now.
