PSA: That $85 permit for my Nob Hill garage conversion saved me $4,200 in fines
I almost skipped pulling a permit on my detached garage in Nob Hill because the city office quoted 6 weeks and I wanted to be done before summer. A guy at the permit counter on Marquette told me inspectors do random drive-bys on alley-facing work, and he was right, they rolled up while my slab was still wet. The $85 permit plus $310 in required corrections kept me from a $4,200 unpermitted work fine, and the inspector even showed me where my header was undersized. Anyone else get flagged for alley work they thought nobody could see from the street?
I used to figure alley work was invisible since nobody drives back there. Then a buddy in South Land Park got hit with a stop work order over a fence he put up facing the alley, and it cost him more than the permit would have. Between that and your $4,200 story, pulling the paper first is just cheaper.
