Question about drywall texture matching after a patch job

I saw a huge difference between two patches I did on the same wall in my living room (in Albuquerque, by the way). The first one I did about 3 months ago using a can of orange peel texture looks totally flat and wrong next to the original wall. The second patch I did last week with a hand texture sprayer and thinner mud actually blends way better, even though I thought the can would be easier. Has anyone else found that the spray cans are a waste for matching old Albuquerque stucco-style walls, or is there a trick I'm missing?

Have you tried thinning your mud way more than what the can sprays? I've had way better luck with cans on those textured walls here in Phoenix by holding the can further back and doing light passes, not blasting it on thick.
