Random conversation with a plumber changed my whole approach to drywall

Was chatting with an old plumber named Randy at the parts counter over on 2nd Street, and he mentioned he never tapes his drywall seams twice because the second coat never bonds right in this dry climate. Tried it on my last bathroom patch job, and sure enough the first pass held way better than my usual double coat. Anyone else run into local tricks that flip the standard DIY advice upside down?
