Am I the only one who picks OEM boards over rebuilding when the customer is watching the clock?
Had a Whirlpool duet washer in Franklin last Thursday, control board was fried and the guy needed it running before his in laws showed up Saturday. I could rebuild the old board for $95 in parts and a couple hours on the bench, or drop in an OEM replacement for $210 that goes in 20 minutes. Went OEM because he was standing there watching me, and honestly it saved the call, but I keep wondering if I left money on the table. What do you all do when the customer is hovering and you know a rebuild would hold up fine?
he was standing there watching me" is doing a lot of work in this story. Did he actually say anything about wanting it fast, or did you just assume that because he was in the room? A lot of guys hover because they're curious or bored, not because they're timing you. If the rebuild holds up fine and saves him $115, that's the better call for him and you still get paid for the bench time. I get wanting to look quick, but you gave up a hundred bucks of margin over a feeling. Next time just ask the guy straight up if he's in a rush or if he'd rather save some cash.
