Know exactly what you mean about tools that just sit around. Bought a fancy laser level last year that I used once to hang a single picture. Felt pretty silly after. What kind of stuff are you planning to check with the camera?

Find that hard to believe unless you're an electrician or something. For most people it's a toy you use twice then forget in a drawer. That money could have bought a really nice tool you'd actually use every day.
