Shoutout to the old timer who taught me the zip tie trick for refrigerator compressor access
Was working on a Samsung fridge in a tight kitchen in Philly last month. Couldn't get to the compressor without pulling the whole unit out. This 60 year old guy walks by, sees me struggling, and shows me how to zip tie the condenser fan blade to hold it while I work. Saved me 30 minutes. Has anyone else got a random hack from a random person on a job?

Took me a while to appreciate tips like that honestly. I used to think old school stuff was just outdated and that modern tools were always better. But after a few jobs where the fancy diagnostic equipment let me down or didn't fit in tight spaces, I started paying attention. Now I keep a couple zip ties and a bent wire hanger in my bag at all times. Those random tricks from guys who've been doing this for decades usually solve problems faster than any app or gadget can. It changed my whole mindset about what actually matters on a job.

Honestly that's such a good tip. I had a similar thing happen a few months back on a call in a really cramped laundry room where I couldn't get a good angle on the evaporator coil. Some old timer saw me contorting and just handed me a piece of stiff wire he bent into a hook. Let me reach behind the panel without pulling the whole machine out. I still carry that same piece of wire in my tool bag today. Ngl, the little tricks from people who've been doing this forever always beat the fancy tools.
