TIL how many parts a basic washing machine pump can have
I was taking apart a ten year old Whirlpool pump to clear a clog and counted twelve separate pieces inside, including a tiny plastic impeller I almost lost. Found a diagram online from a repair site that showed each part's name and it was way more complex than I thought. How often do you guys actually rebuild these or just swap the whole unit now?

Damn, twelve pieces is a lot for a hunk of plastic. That tiny impeller is a nightmare to keep track of on a cluttered workbench. So when you found that clog, was it just hair and gunk wrapped around the shaft, or did you find something weirder that caused the whole failure?

Rebuilding those pumps is a total waste of time for most people. Swapping the whole assembly is faster and cheaper when you add up the cost of your own labor. Newer units are designed to be replaced, not fixed, and that's probably for the best. You avoid the risk of messing up the rebuild and having to do the job twice.
