Warning: don't trust a freezer door seal just because it looks fine

Had a call last week from a lady in Phoenix whose ice cream was all mushy. Checked the seal on her Whirlpool freezer and it looked perfect no cracks or gaps. But I ran my finger along the bottom edge and felt a tiny bit of cold air. Turns out the magnet strip inside was shot. Replaced the gasket and bam 0 degrees again. Anybody else run into seals that look good but are actually failing?

Honestly that magnet strip idea is something I never would have thought of. Makes sense though, the whole seal assembly is more than just the rubber part.

Yeah I gotta agree with you there. It's one of those things where you look at it and go "well duh" but it never actually crossed your mind until someone points it out. I've been messing with seals on my old pickup for years and always just focused on the rubber part, never thought about what holds it in place. Makes you wonder how many other little details we overlook because we're so used to seeing just the obvious part. It's like finding out there's a whole hidden layer to something you thought you understood.
