Cut a 60 foot oak in Ridgewood last Tuesday and the hinge wood gave out on me
I was taking down a 60 foot red oak in Ridgewood last Tuesday, back leaning over a garage, and about 40 feet up I felt the hinge go soft on me. The tree had a old wound about 12 feet up that I missed on the walk around because it was hidden behind English ivy. I had a pull line set and my ground guy was on the rope, so when the top started to sit back I yelled and he took up slack fast. The tree landed maybe 8 feet off my notch, right between the garage and a fence, and it scared the hell out of me. Spent 20 minutes with a hand saw clearing ivy off the next one before I even started my cuts. Anyone else getting surprised by hidden rot under ivy this time of year, and how are you catching it before you climb?
