Debate: climbing spurs on removals, I switched after 16 years and now I'm second guessing it
Ngl I used to gear up with spurs on every takedown, no matter the tree, because that's how the old crew in Tulsa trained me back in 2007. About 8 months ago I started spiking only the trunk and switching to a lanyard and rope walk for the limb walks, after a close call on a big silver maple. Now my legs aren't wrecked at the end of the day, but my times are slower and the boss keeps asking why I'm not done by 3. So which side are you on, do spurs stay on for the whole removal or do you strip them once you're out on the limbs?
Sounds like the close call is still living rent free in your head, which is fair. What actually happened on that silver maple, did a limb let go or did you slip? Because that changes the answer a lot. If the wood was sketchy then slowing down is just the cost of going home in one piece, and your boss can deal. But if it was more of a footing thing you might be able to get your speed back with practice instead of ditching the whole method.
