Had to pick between a crane and a big climb on a huge oak in Portland

The tree was over 80 feet tall and leaning over a house. The choice was a 100-ton crane for a full day or a three-man climb with a rigging setup. We went with the climb to save the client money and because of tight street access. It took us two full days and my arms are still sore, but we got it down clean. Has anyone else faced a similar call on a big residential removal?

Man, that sounds like a beast of a job. I mean, saving the client money is great and all, but two days of that kind of climb? My back hurts just reading about it. Maybe it's just me, but I'd be staring at that crane quote real hard, even if they had to park it two blocks away. Still, getting it down clean without a crane is a serious win, sore arms or not.

Read a story about a crew that did a similar climb, @patkelly. They said the real killer was the wind up there, not just the height. Makes you respect the guys who pull it off without the big machines. That crane money looks real good when you are hanging off a ladder though.
