That day in July when the elm came down too fast
Had a job over near Cedar Rapids last summer where we were taking down a big American elm. I figured it would take about 6 hours but the trunk had rot deeper than I thought. Ended up with the whole tree coming apart at 30 feet and barely missing my buddy's truck. Has anyone else had a routine removal turn into a hairball like that?

Pretty sure that's not cedar country up near Cedar Rapids, it's mostly silver maples and box elders over that way. Elms have been dropping like crazy since Dutch elm disease really went through the area, so that checks out for rot issues. You probably already know this, but those old elms can fool you with a solid looking exterior while the inside's basically mulch. Lucky nobody got hurt, that's the main thing.

Lost a maple last spring that looked fine until it hit my garage roof.
