Took me 6 days to find a hollow trunk on a healthy looking maple

Had a job in Akron where the tree looked fine from the ground, full canopy and no visible rot, but the homeowner said it sounded weird when it rained. I tapped around with a mallet for two days before I finally drilled a test hole near the base and it went through like butter. Said tree had a cavity big enough to stand in, so my question is this: do you guys trust sounding hammers or do you just drill every suspect trunk before you climb?
