Almost lost a dig site last week because of a simple permit oversight

I was out near Santa Fe on Wednesday and the county inspector showed up asking for paperwork I'd filed 3 years ago that apparently expired. Has anyone else dealt with these renewal deadlines sneaking up on them?

Three years is a long time between renewals, isn't it the state's responsibility to send a notice or something? I've got a buddy up in Wyoming who lost a whole weekend because his BLM permit expired mid-project and nobody told him. Did that inspector at least give you a grace period to fix it, or was it a full shut-down situation?

Wait, a state agency let a permit go three years without a renewal notice? That's nuts, I can't believe they just let it sit like that.
