Drove 2 hours to a dig site in Ocala instead of the local creek spot, and I keep wondering if I picked wrong
So back in March I had a free Saturday and two options for some surface collecting. One was a creek about 20 minutes from me where I have pulled a few broken points over the years. The other was a dirt road cut near Ocala, about a two hour haul, that a guy in my local club swore had pottery sherds washing out after the rains. I picked the far one because he made it sound like the spot was about to get graded over for a new subdivision. I got there around 7am and walked that cut for almost four hours in the heat. Found one rough flake and a lot of beer cans. A retired surveyor pulled up around 10 and chatted with me for a bit. He said the sherds everyone talks about came from a mound site that got recorded back in the 1970s and most of it was dug out long ago. On the drive home I kept thinking about that creek. I still have not gone back to check it. Has anyone else burned a whole day chasing a lead from a club member and then wondered what was sitting right down the road the whole time?
