Field guide said check soil temps, I thought he was overthinking it

Last dig near Flagstaff, the lead archaeologist warned me not to screen until the ground hit 50 degrees for 3 days straight. I skipped a morning and pulled up a bunch of cracked pottery that fell apart in my hands. He was right, the freeze-thaw cycle makes everything brittle. Anyone else ruin finds by rushing the season?

Three days straight seems like overkill, I dig in mud all the time.
