Found out a single Roman fort site in England has given up over 750 shoes, and now I can't stop thinking about it
I was reading through some notes from Vindolanda up near Hadrian's Wall and saw that they've pulled more than 750 leather shoes out of the mud there. The wet, airless ground basically pickled them for close to 2,000 years, so you can still make out the little nail patterns on the soles. What got me was that these were just regular people's everyday shoes, tossed out and forgotten, and now they're some of the best clues we have about who actually lived there. Has anyone else run into a site where the "boring" stuff like old trash turned out to be the real prize?
