I thought the dirt layers at my local dig site were just fill, then the trowel hit something hard at 40cm
For about eight months I was convinced the top soil at our town site in Ipswich was all moved around by plowing and had zero real context left. My whole job was bagging it and labeling it as disturbed, which honestly felt like a waste of a Saturday every single time. Then two of us hit a patch at 40cm where the color changed and tiny bits of charcoal and burnt flint kept coming up in a line. It took us three more trips to figure out it was a hearth edge, and a flint blade came out of it on the last day. I had to admit I was wrong to write off the shallow stuff, because this whole context sat above the clay and nobody had looked closely. Has anyone else had a site where the plow zone turned out to be worth screening after all?
