My uncle insisted we'd find nothing but old bottles at that farm in Ohio, but we dug up a complete 19th century horse harness instead.
He said, 'You're wasting your weekend,' but now the local historical society has it on display, so who was right?

Honestly though, your uncle was still right in a way. You went looking for one specific thing and got something totally different, so the trip was still a bust for your original plan. That harness is cool for the museum, but it's not like you can sell it or use it. Most of the time, digging like that just turns up junk and you really do waste your weekend.

Yeah but you're missing the point of the hobby. It's about the chance of finding something, not just the end result. It's like buying a lottery ticket. You know you probably won't win, but the fun is in the "what if." Finding that harness, even if you donate it, is a story. That's the real win, not the cash. Most weekends you find rusty nails, but that one time you find a piece of history makes all the other trips worth it.

Maybe cole's right about the junk, but finding that old coin last year made the whole search feel worth it to me.
