I used to wipe artifacts clean with my thumb until she handed me a soft brush and said wet soil plus thumb oil can scratch pottery glaze and erase residue for dating, so now I bag them dirty and let the lab in Tucson do the cleaning, has anyone else had a find ruined by field cleaning?
That dry brush kit in Flagstaff sounds like it came with a side of guilt trip lol. I rubbed a whole rim sherd down with my thumb last summer like an idiot and now it looks like it went through a dishwasher. Bagging them dirty from here on out.
