Skeptical about the Machu Picchu 'secret chamber' hype

I was at a conference in Cusco last June where a team claimed they found a hidden ritual room under the Temple of the Sun. But when I asked about the soil layer dates, they admitted they only dug 3 feet down before hitting bedrock. I pointed out that local farmers have known about that cavity for decades, and it's just a natural fissure. The whole presentation fell apart after that. Has anyone else seen these sensational claims fall flat with basic geology?
