Stopped at a roadside marker in southern Utah and realized I had been driving past a 1,000 year old village for 6 years
There is a little pull off on Highway 89 near Kanab that I have blown past maybe 200 times on the way to jobs. Two weeks ago a tire blew and I had to sit there for 90 minutes waiting on a tow, so I finally read the sign. It said there was a pueblo village site about 300 yards up the wash with walls still standing. I walked up and there they were. Low rock walls, maybe two feet high, laid out in a full loop around what used to be a plaza. Bits of pottery were sitting right on the surface, gray with black lines on them. It hit me that I had been driving past somebody's whole town for 6 years and never once knew it was there. Now I want to know how many other roadside markers I have ignored. Anybody got a method for finding these small sites without a degree or a permit, or is it mostly just reading every brown sign you see?
idk man I have driven past the same "Historic Marker" signs my whole life and the only one I ever read was about a tree. a tree. meanwhile you found a whole pueblo. my method is basically just pull over and read the sign, which means I've got about 400 years of ignorance left to make up for.
