That bronze age axe head turned out to be fake" - man, that's rough. I got burned on a supposed Roman coin once, learned to take stuff to an expert before getting my hopes up.

Oh man, I gotta disagree a little bit though. Getting burned is part of the fun, right? Like yeah it stings when you find out it's fake, but that's how you learn what to look for next time. I've bought plenty of junk over the years and it taught me way more than just buying the real stuff from a dealer ever would. Taking things to an expert is smart sure, but you miss out on that whole detective work phase where you're learning the details yourself.
