Update: found out my trowel was hiding half the soil stain at my dig in Abilene
Did a week of field work at a site near Abilene and kept wondering why my dirt layers looked so flat compared to the others. Turned out I was scraping with the trowel at too shallow an angle, so I was basically smearing the stain instead of cutting it clean, and a grad student pointed it out on day 5. Anyone else get taught trowel angle by trial and error or did your field school cover it?
