A barista in Boise laughed at my resume and told me to cut the skills section, and I got 3 callbacks in 2 weeks
I had been sending out the same 2 page resume since January with zero replies, maybe 40 applications total. Last month a friend who manages a coffee shop in Boise looked it over while we waited for our drinks and actually laughed, then said the skills section read like a job description for a robot. She told me to delete the whole list and instead put one line under each job about something I actually did. So under my old warehouse job I wrote that I cut loading time by 20 minutes by rearranging the pallet stacks. That one change got me 3 callbacks in 2 weeks after months of silence. Now I'm wondering if cover letters are the same kind of trap, or if those still matter for real. How do you all handle the skills part, do you keep it or drop it?
