A guitar teacher in Nashville told me to stop looking at my fret hand, and my playing got cleaner in about 3 weeks
He said my eyes were chasing my fingers instead of my ears, so I started practicing in a dark room 20 minutes a day, and the sloppy chord changes mostly went away. Has anyone else had a teacher give them one weird tip that actually stuck?
Man, I read a thing from some old jazz guy years ago who said he practiced with the lights off so his hands would learn the neck by feel instead of his eyes babysitting them. That always stuck with me but I never actually tried it until now. Twenty minutes a day in the dark sounds rough at first but I bet your ears get sharp fast when they have no choice. I might steal this, my chord changes get sloppy the second I stop staring.
