Just realized my budget phone camera trick for night shots was all wrong

I tried for months to get decent night shots of the stars with my old Moto G, but everything came out blurry or dark. I finally watched a video that said to prop the phone on a rock and use the 3 second timer instead of touching the shutter. The first shot from my backyard in Phoenix last Tuesday actually showed the Milky Way for the first time. Has anyone else found a simple setting change that fixed your photos better than buying new gear?

Wait, you got the Milky Way with a Moto G? That's wild! I read this article the other day about how using a pair of sunglasses as a makeshift lens hood helps cut down on glare from streetlights, but I never thought about the timer trick. Thanks for sharing that, definitely gonna try it on my next campout.

Read an astronomy blog that said the timer trick basically replaces a remote shutter, @gavinh26.
