Unpopular opinion: The random guy at the bus stop who grilled me about my workout split was more helpful than any trainer I paid
I was waiting for the 56 bus near downtown Portland about 6 months ago, just zoning out after a rough shift. This older dude, maybe 60, looked at my gym bag and goes 'you been doing those isolation curls again, huh?' I almost laughed him off, but he kept talking about how I was wasting time on small muscles when my compound lifts were probably weak. He spent the whole 15 minute wait drawing a simple push-pull-legs schedule on the back of a receipt. I tried his advice for 8 weeks and dropped my bench time by 4 minutes while adding 15 pounds to my deadlift. Has anyone else gotten better feedback from a complete stranger than from a certified professional?

haha YES, man! I had a random guy at the grocery store tell me I was holding my shoulders wrong when I was grabbing stuff off the top shelf. I was like, "ok weirdo" but he showed me how to tuck my elbows and brace my core. Three weeks later my shoulder pain from benching was gone, my chiropractor was like "what are you doing different?" and I told her it was a dude in the produce aisle π. Sometimes the real experts are just regular people who notice stuff because they've been grinding for decades themselves.

Paid trainers often follow a script or a system they learned in a certification class. A random old guy at the bus stop has been lifting weights since before most of us were born, and he's seen every mistake in the book. There's no sales pitch or hidden agenda, just pure, practical knowledge from years of trial and error. You can't buy that kind of real world experience. That's why this doesn't surprise me one bit.
