A comment on my Orion Nebula shot about 'clipping the blacks' finally made me understand what they meant.
After someone on this forum pointed out that my processing was crushing all the shadow detail into pure black, I started using the histogram tool in my editing software and now I leave a tiny bit of data at the very bottom to keep the image from looking flat.

Interesting take! I actually found histograms made things more confusing for me at first. They show data in a way that can be hard to act on without a lot of other context. For my workflow, just looking at the raw numbers in a simple table gives me a clearer picture of what's going on. Maybe it depends on the type of data you're working with.
