I used to think the Orion Nebula was just a fuzzy blob
For years, my old 4-inch scope from high school showed it as a faint gray smudge. Last month, I finally got a used 8-inch Dobsonian and pointed it at M42. The difference was huge. I could clearly see the greenish glow and the four stars of the Trapezium cluster right in the center. It went from a shapeless cloud to a real object with structure in about 30 seconds. Has anyone else had a view completely change after a simple gear upgrade?

Oh man, that reminds me of when I first saw Saturn's rings clearly. It just clicks.

Wait, you could actually see the rings? I had to use a telescope for that. My first time was just a fuzzy yellow dot, it took me years to get a view clear enough to make out any detail. That must have been an incredible moment.

Wait, you couldn't see the rings at first? @brookep27, I totally believe you though. I remember my first time too, it took me like three different telescopes before I got a clear view. The moment I saw that little yellow dot pop into a crisp ring, I almost dropped my coffee mug on the porch. It was like the universe just decided to show off for a second.
