My Orion nebula shot changed after I switched to dithering

I've been stacking the same target all winter from my backyard in Tucson, and usually my final image looks noisy with those colored speckles. Last week I turned on dithering in my mount between every 10 frames, and the difference in the star background is night and day. Has anyone else seen this big of a jump from just changing the capture routine, or is there another step I should try next?

Well now, that dithering trick is real, but I should point out it mostly helps with the colored speckles from the camera's read noise. The overall noise level might still be there, so you'll want to check your calibration frames too, especially bias and dark frames.
